Navigating Identity and My Journey Leading Anti-Racism Marketing Work
Every day, I strive to intertwine my personal identity with my professional role. This quest for balance took on new significance in May 2020, following the murder of George Floyd. It was then that I assumed a pivotal role leading the Colorado Nonprofit Association's charge in supporting Black Lives Matter and anti-racism efforts.
Within my Communications department, we recognized the importance of personal awareness and education in guiding our content strategy. Our goal was clear: to dismantle white supremacy, amplify the voices of Black Lives Matter, and advocate for racial justice. The content we produced had to be personal, authentic, and sensitive to the complexities of the revolution. We refused to cater to the status quo or shield institutions from the harsh realities of systemic racism and white supremacy.
Our audience spanned a diverse spectrum—from Black and Brown individuals to seasoned accomplices and allies just beginning their journey. It was essential to create a space that welcomed everyone, especially our BIPOC community. For me, commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression went beyond mere words; it required tangible action and accountability.
I pushed myself and my team to establish commitments and accountability measures. We approached our work with humanity and strategy, acknowledging our limitations and remaining open to critique. I had to allow myself to be challenged to change and to continually unlearn.
This commitment was put to the test on June 4, 2020, when news of Sean Monterossa's killing reached me. I felt wrecked. I made the difficult decision to cancel that edition of our member newsletter, recognizing that business as usual was no longer acceptable. I required something more than going back to regularly scheduled programming. I informed our leadership team and staff of the decision as I cried over my keyboard because we are all accountable for this state-sanctioned violence.
The following days were dedicated to crafting a new newsletter format—one that reflected the gravity of the moment and our unwavering commitment to justice. It was a deeply emotional process, requiring me to tap into my fears and anxieties to connect authentically with our audience. I spent countless hours figuring out how to support our BIPOC members, bring along our white members, represent myself, and represent the Association.
In the end, our revamped newsletter served as a testament to our collective dedication to change. It was a reminder that the fight against racism is both personal and professional—a journey that requires us to harness our power and show up against injustice in all its forms.
As I continue this journey, I am reminded of the transformative power of storytelling. I harnessed my platform and presence at the Association to own my power. I tapped into my feelings and anxieties to reach and connect with our audiences in an innovative and authentic new way.

The Story of the Colorado Nonprofit Community Memory Altar
Driven by a desire to honor my father's memory and offer solace to others who were also grappling with loss, I embarked on a unique endeavor: the creation of the 2020/2021 Nonprofit Community Memory Altar. This digital sanctuary became a space for individuals across Colorado's nonprofit sector to pay tribute to their departed loved ones.
In October 2020, I faced one of the toughest moments of my life—I lost my dad, Oscar, to pancreatic cancer. As the year drew to a close and the world grappled with the challenges of the pandemic, I found myself navigating the depths of grief while separated from my family in California.
There were moments when I felt like giving up, weighed down by the heaviness of loss and the isolation of the pandemic. But amidst the darkness, I found a flicker of hope—a spark born from my grief.
The concept was simple yet profound—I invited participants to submit the names of their loved ones along with cherished memories, stories, poems, or songs. The response was overwhelming. The community rallied around the altar, offering comfort, support, and solidarity in the face of collective grief.
Creating the Nonprofit Community Memory Altar was a radical act of compassion. After losing my dad, I learned that obituaries are wildly expensive and inaccessible to many so I wanted to create a space where everyone, regardless of their means, could honor their loved ones.
The altar became a beacon of hope in a time of darkness, reminding us that even in our most vulnerable moments, we are never truly alone.
For me, the creation of the altar became a defining moment—a testament to my strength, resilience, and unwavering love for my father. Harnessing my grief and love, inspired by dad, ended up being the moment I knew I could keep moving forward to honor him.
The altar was a symbol of healing and remembrance. Through community, compassion, and shared experiences, we can find solace and strength to continue our journey toward healing.
In honoring our emotions and creating space for our experiences, we pave the way for healing, growth, and renewal. The Colorado Nonprofit Community Memory Altar was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of love.
As I reflect on my journey with the Colorado Nonprofit Community Memory Altar, I realize that this experience marked a profound transformation within me—from a storyteller to a dedicated story keeper. It wasn't just about sharing narratives; it was about safeguarding them, holding them sacred, and ensuring they were never forgotten.
This shift from storyteller to story keeper holds immense significance for my culture. In a world inundated with information and noise, it's easy for stories to get lost or overshadowed. By embracing the role of a story keeper, I became a custodian of memories, a guardian of legacies, and a champion of collective narratives.
Moreover, as a communicator and marketing professional, this transformation took on added significance. It wasn't just about crafting compelling narratives for brands or organizations; it was about creating brave spaces where people could share their truths authentically and unapologetically. It was about fostering an environment of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity, where every voice was valued and heard.
Moving into this role of actively creating brave spaces was both a privilege and a responsibility. It meant going beyond the surface level of storytelling to delve deeper into the human experience—to embrace vulnerability, empathy, and authenticity in all its forms.
The Colorado Nonprofit Community Memory Altar served as a tangible manifestation of this ethos. It wasn't just a digital platform; it was a sanctuary—a safe haven where individuals could express their grief, celebrate their loved ones, and find solace in shared experiences. It was a testament to the power of community, compassion, and connection—a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we are never truly alone.
As I continue on this journey of transformation—from storyteller to story keeper—I am reminded of the profound impact that stories have on our lives and our collective consciousness. They have the power to inspire, to heal, and to unite us in ways that transcend boundaries and divisions.
In embracing this role, I hope to continue creating brave spaces where stories can flourish, where truths can be shared, and where humanity can be celebrated in all its beautiful complexity. For in the end, it is through our stories that we find meaning, purpose, and connection in a world that is constantly evolving and changing.

Rooted in Compassion and Community
At the heart of Loop and Honey is a story that champions compassion, empathy, and community. My communications and marketing consulting company is dedicated to these principles, and it's no accident that the name is derived from my beloved rescue dogs: Lupulin and Honeyman. These furry family members inspired me to build a business that stands on the pillars of humanity.
Honoring Lupulin and Honeyman
The name Loop and Honey is a heartfelt tribute to my first two rescue dogs, Lupulin and Honeyman. Although Honeyman passed away in 2018, his legacy lives on as we continue to provide a safe haven for rescue dogs like him. Our family has expanded with two more furry brothers, Dodge and Poncharoo. Our commitment to offering these pups a loving home is a core value that fuels our brand.

5 Things Marketers Can Do to Start Their DEI Journey
Our contributions as communicators can influence the way people move and interact. We have opportunities to catalyze movements and demand equitable and inclusive systems, but only if we acknowledge and challenge the structures from which we derive our power, whether tied to our identity, title, position, or platform.
We are trained to make people feel. Marketers hold the power to control narratives, set language, and define values. We have the perspective and privilege to connect and move people. It is our responsibility to ensure our actions are authentic, thoughtful, and respectful. As a mixed, Mexican-American identifying marketer by profession, and after more than ten years in this field, I have experienced false flags, virtue signaling, disrespect, microaggressions, and even a White-identifying male CEO slamming his hands down on a table across from me in a glass-walled conference room while yelling red-faced, “Maureen. I am the CEO!”
We must do better. Our contributions as communicators can influence the way people move and interact. We have opportunities to catalyze movements and demand equitable and inclusive systems, but only if we acknowledge and challenge the structures from which we derive our power, whether tied to our identity, title, position, or platform. Here are five things marketers can do to start their DEI journey:
1. Make a commitment to educate yourself
Educate yourself about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and always be authentic about your journey. Get curious. Follow and engage with local DEI organizations and agencies on social media, read books, watch movies, start conversations, and attend training and events. Explore BIPOC-written and created materials about marketing and outside of our field. Make a real commitment and do the work.
2. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
We are marketers and humans, so ground yourself in humanity. DEI work is consequential and you will make mistakes. Acknowledge when you don't have the answer or when your company is not the best voice to share to minimize mistakes along the way. Use the networks you have built to hold your audiences accountable, but first, hold yourself accountable, and always lead with a sincere apology when you make a mistake.
3. Honor the people already doing the work
Pain, trauma, and oppression are not products to be traded for reputation, revenue, or credibility. Honor stories and storytellers, by honoring their energy, capacity, time, and experience. If making space or passing the mic are strategies important to your workplace, then those individuals stepping up and in the spotlight need to be honored (with payment).
4. Lean in to being uncomfortable
Weaving DEI practices into your marketing work demands risk beyond unsubscribes and unfollows. You may find yourself in uncomfortable conversations and awkward video meetings, being uncomfortable is part of the work. Your DEI initiatives and activities may not always align with your quarterly success metrics or your team may not understand your insistence on including pronouns, so stay grounded in your humanity, your values, and the true impact this work has on your non-White identifying colleagues, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family.
5. Find a friend, form a committee
No one should do DEI work in a silo. Find and connect with people in your workplace across teams, functions, and departments who are also committed to DEI. Talk. Collaborate. Listen. Share resources. Allow yourself to be challenged to change and continually (un)learn.
Creating Equitable and Inclusive Marketing Strategies
Communications professionals possess the power to influence people's behaviors and shape the way they perceive the world around them. With this power comes the responsibility to challenge the structures that uphold inequality and perpetuate systemic racism. It is not enough to simply "make space" for BIPOC voices; we must actively dismantle the structures that marginalize them.
Research has shown that diverse and inclusive marketing strategies can lead to better business outcomes. According to a report by McKinsey & Company, companies with diverse executive teams are 33% more likely to outperform their peers in profitability. This demonstrates the importance of embracing diversity not just for ethical reasons, but also for the success of our organizations.
To create equitable and inclusive marketing strategies, we must first acknowledge the ubiquity of white supremacy and systemic racism. We cannot address these issues if we deny their existence or fail to recognize our own privilege. It is crucial to listen to and amplify the voices of BIPOC communities, ensuring that their experiences and perspectives are included in our narratives.
Passing the mic to marginalized people is not enough if they are not given the respect and compensation they deserve. When we advocate for making space, we must also advocate for fair treatment and pay for those individuals who step into the spotlight. Pain, trauma, and oppression should never be commodified or exploited for reputation or revenue. We must honor the stories and storytellers by valuing their time, energy, capacity, and experience.
Creating equitable and inclusive marketing strategies requires us to take risks and step outside our comfort zones. We must be willing to make mistakes and learn from them. Instead of personalizing or deflecting criticism, we should listen and reflect on our actions. By grounding ourselves in our shared humanity and seeking justice, we can use our networks to hold ourselves and our communities accountable.
